Hotels
Finding a hotel in Bali which is in your preferred location, and has all the inclusions which are important to you, can be a little confusing, as there are well over a thousand hotels to choose from, plus a huge number of homestays.
I think that the international standard hotel/resort rates from US$100 per night upwards, compare favourably with the prices in other parts of the region.
It’s the lower end of the accommodation spectrum, the homestays, which are slowly pricing themselves out of the market. Just a couple of years ago, it was not unusual to pay between Rp50-75.000 per night for a simple room, with fan, cold water shower, and a small breakfast. The same room today costs anywhere from Rp150.000 upwards, without any improvements having been done.
The next grade of accommodation, often still calling itself homestay or pension, costs around Rp250.000 per night for a nice room, usually without air con, but with a fan, hot water showers and breakfast. Rooms with air con generally start at around Rp350.000 per night – regardless of what Lonely Planet says.
To get you started, I am listing some of my personal favourites, in different parts of Bali, ranging from budget homestays to international standard hotels.
Sanur Accommodation
Keke Homestay – budget, rooms with and without air con, price starts at around Rp150.00 per night for a room with fan and hot water shower, which includes breakfast and tax/service
Prima Cottages – low/mid range. All rooms have air con, hot/cold water. There are also some Garden Bungalows. Price for the rooms are around US$40 per night, includes breakfast and tax/service
Hotel Vila Shanti – directly on the beach. Rooms start at US$75 per night.
Kuta/Legian Accommodation
Hotel Wida, low/mid range. All rooms have air con, hot/cold water. There are also some Garden Bungalows. Price for the rooms are around US$50 per night, which includes breakfast and tax/service. Less than 5 minutes walk to Legian beach, and close to the Commonwealth Bank.
Legian Beach Resort, luxury resort, right on the beach. Rates start at US$145 per night, including breakfast, tax/service.
Hard Rock Hotel, fun place, constantly changing entertainment.
Candi Dasa Accommodation
The Watergarden Hotel and Spa luxury resort with famous Koi Pond restaurant. Great for a romantic getaway – rates start at US$135, including breakfast and tax & service.
Kelapa Mas, low/mid range accommodation, prices start at around Rp350.000
Tulamben Accommodation
Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort & Restaurant, mid range, great value at US$37 per night, including full breakfast for two, as well as tax & service. Diving with Tulamben Wreck Divers, the most professional dive centre in Tulamben.
Another hotel in Tulamben which I can recommend is Safety Stop Tulamben Restaurant & Bungalows.
Pemuteran Accommodation
Reef Seen Divers Reef Seen Bali is the longest established dive operation in Pemuteran. Now that they offer their own accommodation as well, there really is no reason for not diving and staying here. Reef Seen Bali were instrumental in starting the Bio Rock reef regeneration project.
Adi Assri Resort comfortable, new resort on the north coast of Bali.
Munduk Accommodation
Manahliang Bungalows Munduk is a traditional village, up in the mountains, about an hours drive from Lovina. In Munduk you can still get an idea of the traditional Bali.
Ubud Accommodation
Putri Ayu Cottages now that the property has been renovated it’s more inviting than ever.
Nirvana Pension This really is my favourite. A stay at Nirvana Pension in Ubud is the essential Bali experience. Set in a lovely, tropical garden, there is an atmosphere of peace and quiet.
Since I live in Bali, I am happy to make reservations for most hotels, as well as many homestays which may not have their own website.
I am also showing a link to Agoda hotel bookings. Agoda is my hotel booking engine of choice, and I use Agoda whenever I feel like having a break – even here in Bali, as the Agoda rates are very competitive indeed. I would really appreciate it if you would use the Agoda booking engine on this page. If you do, I’ll receive a (very) small commission from Agoda, which helps me maintain this website.
